Civil War: The South wanted to leave the United States and become a separate country. One reason was they knew President Lincoln planned to end slavery and free the slaves. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. Eventually the South surrendered. The 13th Amendment had freed the slaves, and the South rejoined the United States. Sadly, Lincoln was shot and killed 6 days after the end of the war and never got to experience the new country he'd helped create.
