Michigan History Study Guide
The PLAN is to have this test on June 6. With "heat-half-days" and the many other events going on in school, this date may change to a later date (not sooner).
1. Before Michigan became a state, it was part of the Northwest Territory.
2. In 1787, congress passed a law called the Northwest Ordinance.
3. The Northwest Ordinance was a plan to make five states out of the Northwest Territory. It listed the rules for becoming a state including having a population of 60,000 people, and having a Constitution (writing "law of the land").
4. The Northwest Ordinance also stated that slavery was against the law in the territory. No one could take any NEW slaves, but those who already HAD slaves were allowed to keep them.
5. In 1805, the Territory of Michigan was created. The capital at this time was Detroit!
